Abstract
Glaucoma continues to pose a serious threat for the aging population, and can have a significant impact on the quality of life of the affected individuals. In addition, the prevalence of the disease is likely to increase as the worldwide older demographic increases. The majority of patients affected by glaucoma are still undiagnosed, particularly in underdeveloped countries. Advances in imaging technology are likely to provide further insight on the pathophysiology of the disease, and will allow new and more effective treatment modalities. Because glaucoma is a slowly progressing optic neuropathy, the detection of glaucomatous change continues to be a critical component in the management of the disease. Although the only treatment available for glaucoma is aimed at reducing IOP, recent advances in gene therapy and drug delivery may offer valid alternatives in the treatment of the disease in the future.
