Vaccine safety is a critical part of the vaccine development pathway. In the 21st century, society has come to expect that scientists develop vaccines that are 100% effective and without adverse events or risks. This is an incredibly high standard to meet, and it is not possible to meet these expectations. Nonetheless, scientists have developed comprehensive approaches to evaluate the safety of vaccines in order to give society confidence that a vaccine is of high quality, safe, and effective. This chapter describes the various activities that are undertaken both before and after licensure to ensure that a vaccine is as safe as possible.
