Abstract
A promising application of lasers in medicine is the destruction of arterial plaque using minimally invasive catheters rather than by surgical intervention. Key experiments involve determination of the optical and thermal properties of the tissue of interest. Thermal imaging techniques using a video-scanning thermograph have been applied in the study of argon laser (514 nm wavelength) impingement on the intimal surface of the aorta. The measurements show that for intensities typical of surgical use the heating rate is above the maximum for which thermodynamic equilibrium can be maintained.
