N2 - Background: Introducing alternative medicine into a university health science center is an academic and culturally creative challenge. In 1997, the Alternative and Integrative Medicine Therapies Journal Club was started at the University of Texas Medical Branch by faculty and students in family medicine, nursing, and other disciplines. Its purpose was to create a longitudinal, interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of alternative and integrative healthcare using principles of evidence-based medicine. Discussion: Described here is the development and growth of an alternative and integrative healthcare journal club which employs principles of evidence-based medicine, interdisciplinary collaboration, electronic mail for posting of sessions, and commercial support. The monthly sessions include a sponsored dinner, discussion of the scientific article(s), and an experiential component. Each month a different alternative modality or concept is selected for presentation and discussion. Students, residents, faculty, or alternative healthcare providers present the articles followed by group discussion. We also address some of the current challenges in bringing a program in integrative healthcare training to a university health science center. (Int Med 1999;2:31-34) (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Inc.
