To the Editor: A recent Sounding Board contribution¹ has led me for the first time to question the editorial judgment of the Journal in including a paper for publication. Dr. Leibel, in claiming that there is an erosion in the respect for the sanctity of human life, comes very close to advancing a conspiratorial theory. It is certainly true that anyone advocating nontreatment of terminally ill patients is obligated to answer one very important question, Is the justification a matter of maximum utility or of distributive justice?
