In view of the chronic nature of the oroantral fistula, the Caldwell Luc procedure with the nasal antrostomy was performed routinely to ensure a healthy maxillary antrum. An added advantage of the gold foil technique was that there was no loss of vestibule depth as there is with the buccal flap procedure. This provided for a better situation in the construction of a prosthesis without need for a second surgical procedure to provide adequate sulcus depth. This technique proved itself to be consistently successful in closing oral antral fistulas while maintaining the normal anatomical architecture of the oral cavity.
