Abstract
Splenectomy has become the time-tested standard for management of blunt splenic trauma. A greater appreciation of the role of splenectomy in promoting postoperative sepsis has generated interest in splenic salvage procedures. Acceptance of splenorrhaphy has been hampered by the perception that it is a far lengtheir procedure, requires greater technical expertise, and is associated with greater intraoperative blood loss than splenectomy. This study was undertaken to compare splenectomy and splenorrhaphy when performed for blunt trauma in patients presenting to a community-based trauma center.
