N1 - Funding Information: The Venous Access National Guideline and Registry Development (VANGUARD) initiative is working with the broader community of stakeholders in this domain and with the major agencies concerned with development of digitally interoperable terminology (including the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, the Health Level Seven Clinical Interoperability Council, the National Library of Medicine Common Data Elements [CDE] Repository, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Cancer Informatics Program, the Agency for Health Research and Quality, and others). With the Society of Interventional Radiology and other organizations, VANGUARD is working on development of structured reporting instruments to enable automated extraction of data elements from the electronic health record, as well as platform-independent tools to automate documentation and retrieval of thoracic central vein obstruction (TCVO) events by using a visual interface based on anatomic maps. Through VANGUARD, patients with TCVO, clinicians, and researchers will have the opportunity to participate in developing and updating TCVO CDEs and will be able to access them from publicly available sites. A TCVO patient registry and a patient and device registry for central venous access are also planned. Participants will also be able to use terms from other useful CDE collections and efforts, including validated health surveys, adaptive tests of patient-reported outcomes, disability rating scales, quality-of-life surveys, and other instruments to assist evaluation of health, comorbidities, and quality-of-life status of patients as TCVO disease progresses and before and after TCVO interventions.
