Abstract
Estimates of risk for low radiation doses and protracted exposures cannot be made directly from available data but must be derived by extrapolation from observation at high doses, based on models of dose and dose-rate relationships. Dose response and dose-rate data that are sufficient to develop and test such models were obtained from studies in animals. The data on tumor induction after low linear energy transfer (LET) radiation for various experimental systems has clearly shown that the dose response varies greatly from tissue to tissue. Because of this, no single dose response model is adequate to describe all the data.
