Once Hirschowitz had made the decision, Avery-Jones helped him obtain a fellowship from the American Cancer Society with Marvin Pollard at the University of Michigan. In Ann Arbor, he found a stimulating environment and a great deal of freedom to do research. Continuing his basic interest in gastric-secretion physiology, he expanded into other areas through studies on both animals and humans. His abstracts were accepted for presentation in national scientific meetings, and the excitement of success propelled him.",
