Abstract
The intention of this report is to give an overview of the gastrointestinal peptide, peptide YY (PYY). PYY is a recently isolated gut peptide that is primarily found in the distal bowel; it is localized in open type endocrine cells of the mucosa. Exogenous administration of PYY results in a variety of effects on the GI tract and pancreas reminiscent of a gut factor called 'pancreatone' that was isolated in crude form only. Plasma levels of PYY increase in response to an oral meal, especially fat. Because PYY exerts numerous inhibitory actions on GI function and slows movement of chyme down the GI tract, PYY may play an important role as an 'ideal brake.'
