Abstract

Classically, the lesions of zoster are grouped along a unilateral, linear distribution. More than a dozen lesions outside the dermatomal pattern suggest disseminated disease. Herpes simplex is more frequent and severe in patients whose cell-mediated immune responses are suppressed. Episodes are characterized by large, progressive, painful lesions.
