Abstract

Effective laser angioplasty treatment requires melting or disintegration of plaque with no or minimal damage to the underlying vessel. To understand laser interaction with plaque deposits and vessel wall and optimize the treatment parameters, optical and thermal properties of plaque deposits and vessel wall are determined. Surface and subsurface temperature distributions are measured. Ablation front temperatures are determined and the effect of conducting medium and overall response of tissue is studied.
