Abstract

Operating room efficiency continues to be a frustrating management issue. Improvements are possible, but difficult. One approach that appears to be promising is the use of interdisciplinary TQM teams. Our experience at UTMB has been encouraging, although not as favorable as we might have hoped. Each hospital is different, with differing political issues, different financial and nonfinancial motivators, and different organizational cultures. However, in every hospital, objective analysis of the factors that maintain inefficiencies should permit development of a rational plan with some possibility of success. The participants must believe that the next time the boulder will not roll back down the hill.
