Abstract

A partnership between the University of Michigan School of Nursing and The Detroit URC LA VIDA, the Southwest Detroit Partnership to Prevent Intimate Violence against Latina Women, was created to increase understanding of barriers and facilitators to prevention of the two overlapping public health epidemics, HW and intimate partner violence (IPV). The study, using focus group methodology, is unique in that understanding of HIV-IPV prevention was sought from a community perspective that included not only the community members (three groups, n = 28) but also their health and social service providers (three groups, n = 30). Study findings provide insights into the HIV-IPV prevention needs of a vulnerable and understudied population, monolingual, Spanish-speaking Latinas.
