Abstract
Esophageal cancer is an uncommon malignancy with a high mortality rate. Squamous cell carcinoma is the predominantly histologic subtype worldwide, while adenocarcinoma represents the majority of cases in North America. Esophageal cancer is staged using the 8th edition of the TNM staging system. Surgical resection is currently the best curative treatment for patients without nodal or distant metastases. For patients with locally-advanced disease, multimodal treatment with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, or combined chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery is the recommended treatment. Systemic therapy is the most effective treatment for patients with metastatic disease.
