Abstract
The use of ritodrine hydrochloride to interrupt preterm labor is associated with numerous unwanted maternal side effects. Virtually all women exhibit hemodynamic and metabolic changes due to the β-mimetic activity of ritodrine. Less frequent side effects include tremor, palpitations, sweating, chills, gastrointestinal complaints, nervousness, and occasionally cardiac symptoms, such as chest pain. The authors have recently managed one woman who developed what they suspect to be a side effect not previously reported in conjunction with ritodrine therapy. During intravenous treatment for preterm labor, this patient developed fever that subsided promptly with discontinuation of ritodrine.
