Abstract
This report examines the genetic basis for Salmonella enterotoxin production. The examination was conducted using an internal XbaI/HincII sequence of plasmid pJM17 encoding cholera toxin as a gene probe (ctxAB). This gene probe detected some sequence homology with the total as well as digested chromosomal DNA fragments from Salmonella strains under reduced stringent conditions in dot-blot and Southern-blot hybridization experiments. Our hybridization analysis results suggested that the enterotoxin (ent) gene of Salmonella resides on chromosomal DNA and that the Salmonella ent operon might be duplicated on the Salmonella chromosome.
