Bronchial asthma is a chronic disease with variable airway narrowing, respiratory distress, hyper-responsiveness and inflammation. The morbidity and mortality are increasing despite availability of newer diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. The National Institutes of health recently issued revised guidelines for disease management. The keys to improved care include earlier recognition of the illness, reduced exposure to triggers, careful monitoring, greater se of long-term control medications and improved patient education.
