Abstract

Bilateral neonatal pulmonary hypoplasia can be classified on the basis of whether or not a cause of a fetal lung compression exists, and four broad categories can be defined: (1) hypoplasia secondary to extrathoracic compression, (2) hypoplasia secondary to thoracic cage compression, (3) hypoplasia secondary to intrathoracic compression, and (4) primary hypoplasia with no obvious cause of compression.
