Abstract

The clinical understanding of changes in plasma volume and other body water compartments induced by infusion of intravenous fluids has been poorly quantified. Recently, investigators have studied the effects of intravenous fluids on volume expansion using mathematic techniques similar to those used for pharmacokinetic analysis of drugs. Combining these techniques with traditional concepts regarding perioperative fluid therapy promises to increase the precision with which fluids are given before, during, and after surgery.
