Abstract

The use of alternating silver sulfadiazine and silver sulfadiazine-nitrofurazone, sequentially compared in 112 patients in a prospective study, proved an effective combination for treatment of major burns. The clinically undesirable side effects resulting from using either agent alone were eliminated or significantly diminished without altering the pattern of microbial isolates from the burn wound and without promoting the development of more resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus.
