A case of a ganglion cyst occurring in the distal phalanx of the toe

Introduction: Ganglion cysts are benign tumor-like lesions that commonly occur on or around the joints and tendons of the hands and feet. Fisk et al, first reported an interosseous ganglion of the tibia in 1949 but overall there have been few reports on ganglion occurrences in the bone. We report a rare case of a ganglion cyst occurring in the distal phalanx of the toe. Case: A 59 year old woman presented with pain in the left toe. MRI images showed a cystic tumor in the distal phalanx of the left toe. An interosseous ganglion was suspected and excision was performed under general anesthesia. There was no recurrence at 6 months post surgery. Conclusion: Interosseous ganglions should be included in the list of differential diagnosis of cystic lesions of the distal phalanx of the hands and feet.
